FAQ
Bushfire Defence FAQs
What areas do you service?
We work across the Adelaide Hills, Fleurieu Peninsula, Barossa and Adelaide’s bushfire-prone suburbs. If you are unsure whether we cover your area, call us on 08 8337 4969.
How do I get a quote?
Call 08 8337 4969 or request a quote online. We will ask about your property and arrange a time to assess it, then give you a quote for the system you need.
Do you charge for quotes?
It depends on the job. We will tell you before we visit if there is a charge for the assessment.
When should I install a bushfire defence system?
Before the Fire Danger Season starts in your district. Booking early gives time to install the system and test it properly before summer.
What does a bushfire defence system include?
Most systems include roof and gutter sprinklers, a petrol or diesel fire fighting pump, a dedicated water supply and one or more fire hose reels. We design each system to suit your property.
Which pumps do you install?
We supply and install Davey and Reefe fire fighting pumps, and service most other makes of petrol and diesel pump.
Can you use my existing tank or pump?
Often, yes. We inspect what you already have and tell you what can be reused and what needs upgrading.
Do I need a dedicated firefighting water supply?
New homes in bushfire-prone areas of South Australia usually need one under the state’s bushfire building standard (MBS 008). The size ranges from 2,000 to 22,000 litres depending on your property.
How often should my system be serviced?
Once a year, before the Fire Danger Season. We service the pump, run the sprinklers and hoses, and check your water supply and fittings.
What warranty do you offer?
Our installations come with a 25-year labour warranty.
Are your plumbers licensed?
Yes. Every job is carried out by licensed plumbers from Paterson Trades Group, a South Australian family business in the trades since 1927.
What payment options do you offer?
We accept major credit cards, EFT and cash. Buy now, pay later is available through Humm on jobs of $2,000 or more.
What types of businesses need a commercial bushfire defence system?
Any business in or near bushland can benefit, including wineries, farms, tourism accommodation, workshops, schools and community buildings in high bushfire risk areas.
Will the system work during a power outage?
Yes. We use firefighting pumps driven by petrol or diesel engines, so the system runs without mains electricity.
Can you work with our existing tanks and pumps?
Often, yes. We inspect what you already have and tell you what can be reused and what needs upgrading.
How long does a commercial installation take?
It depends on the size of the site. We give you a timeframe with your quote after the site assessment.
Can my shed system connect to my house bushfire sprinklers?
Yes. We can run both from one pump and water supply if it has enough capacity, or install a separate system for the shed.
Do I need a separate water tank for my shed?
Not always. We check your existing water supply and tell you whether it can support both buildings.
Will sprinklers damage machinery or stored hay?
The sprinklers are mounted on the outside of the shed to wet the roof and walls, so they do not spray inside the building.
How much does a shed defence system cost?
The price depends on the shed size, pump and water supply. We provide a fixed quote after inspecting your property.
How do bushfire sprinkler systems protect a home?
They wet the roof, gutters, walls and surrounding ground, which helps stop embers from igniting your home and nearby fuel.
Do you install Davey and Reefe pumps?
Yes. We supply and install Davey and Reefe fire fighting pumps, sized to suit your sprinkler system.
How much water does a bushfire sprinkler system use?
It depends on the number of sprinklers and how long they run. We size the pump and water supply to suit your system.
Do I still need a bushfire plan if I have sprinklers?
Yes. Sprinklers support your plan but do not replace it, and the CFS advises every household in a bushfire risk area to have a written plan.
Should I choose a petrol or diesel fire pump?
Both are suitable. Petrol pumps cost less upfront, while diesel pumps suit larger systems and longer run times. We will recommend the right option for your property.
Why can't I use an electric pump?
Mains power often fails during a bushfire, so the standard requires a pump that runs independently of mains electricity.
Where should my fire pump be installed?
On a hard surface close to your water supply, away from vegetation, inside a non-combustible enclosure with good ventilation.
Can you replace my old fire pump?
Yes. We can remove your old pump and install a new one sized to your existing sprinklers and hoses.
How often should my fire pump be serviced?
At least once a year, before the Fire Danger Season starts in your district. We also recommend starting your pump yourself every month during summer.
Do you service pumps you did not install?
Yes. We service Davey, Reefe and most other brands of petrol and diesel fire fighting pumps.
Why won't my fire pump start?
Stale fuel is the most common cause, followed by a fouled spark plug, a flat battery or a worn starter. Our service checks all of these.
Do you test the sprinklers as well as the pump?
Yes. We run your sprinklers and hose reels during every service to confirm the whole system works.
How long should my fire hose be?
Long enough for the nozzle to reach every part of your building, and no longer than 36 m under the South Australian standard.
Can a fire hose reel connect to my garden tap?
No. It should connect to your firefighting pump and dedicated water supply so it keeps working when mains water pressure drops.
How many hose reels do I need?
That depends on the size of your home and other buildings. We work it out during your site assessment.
Do you install hose reels for businesses?
Yes. We install fire hose reels on commercial properties as part of a commercial defence system.
How big does my firefighting water tank need to be?
Between 2,000 and 22,000 litres for a new home, depending on your bushfire risk, BAL rating, block size and mains water connection.
Can I use a plastic tank for firefighting water?
Above-ground firefighting tanks must be non-combustible, such as steel or concrete. Plastic tanks can melt in a bushfire.
Can my firefighting water be in the same tank as my household water?
Yes. A combined tank can hold a reserved volume for firefighting that household use cannot draw below.
What fittings do CFS crews need on my tank?
Where fire fittings are required, a 65 mm Storz outlet with a gate or ball valve near the bottom of the tank.
What is included in a bushfire action plan?
A property assessment, your decision on leaving early or staying, triggers to act, evacuation routes, a pre-summer checklist and instructions for your equipment.
Is your plan the same as the CFS Bushfire Survival Plan?
Our plan follows the CFS guidelines and adds detail specific to your property and firefighting equipment.
Do businesses need a bushfire plan?
Yes. Businesses in bushfire risk areas should have a plan that covers staff, customers, stock and equipment.
How often should I update my plan?
Review it every year before the Fire Danger Season, and whenever your household, property or equipment changes.
