Your Fire Pump Checklist Before Summer
A fire pump can sit unused for most of the year, then be needed on the worst day of summer. Many pumps that fail on a fire day were working last season but were not checked before this one. These are the checks to do before the Fire Danger Season starts in your district.
1. Replace old fuel
Petrol goes stale in storage, and stale fuel is one of the most common reasons a pump will not start. Drain any fuel left from last season and refill with fresh fuel. Keep a sealed can of fresh fuel stored safely, ready for fire days.
2. Check the oil
Check the engine oil level and condition. Top it up or change it if it is low or dirty. Some engines will not start, or will shut down, if the oil is low.
3. Start it and let it run
Start the pump and run it with the sprinklers or a hose connected, not dry. Listen for rough running and watch the pressure. A pump that only starts after many pulls needs servicing now, not in January.
4. Check the water supply and fittings
Make sure your tank is full, the outlet valve opens freely and the suction line is clear. Check that fittings, including your CFS outlet if you have one, are in good condition and easy to reach.
5. Test every sprinkler and hose
Run the whole system. Look for blocked sprinkler heads, leaking joints and hoses that have cracked over winter. Make sure each hose reaches every part of your home.
6. Keep starting it through summer
Once the season starts, start your pump every month and run it for a few minutes. It keeps the engine ready and shows up problems early.
